  2. Schedule 40.

  3. waste or supply? for waste 40 is fine, for supply, use copper.. it is tried and tested.

  4. Don't use pvc at all! I redid a house for my father in-law in 1987 with pvc on all the cold water and cpvc on the hot side. I did everything according to code and this spring we started having problems with leaks.  I just spent two days replacing all of it with PEX.  It is very easy to work with,( no primer or glue) and the cost was only slightly more. All the contractors in this area are going to PEX even in multi million dollar homes. Schedule 40 pvc is all right but why take a chance? I do use pvc for DWV ( drain, waste vents) But I am sold on PEX. Your local home center should carry everything you need including renting the crimpers you need to make the connections. Hope this helps and good luck!

  5. Sched 40 is the minimum for draining away gray water as well as supply.  Copper has been the mode of choice for water supply for the past twenty years.  For supply, I agree, PEX is super simple to install.  It might cost more on the front end, but will last MUCH longer than copper.  It will not crack or split.  In fact, factory tests have simulated PEX lasting for 40-50 years.  If your draining away soiled water (i.e. bathroom waste), ABS plastic should be used.

  6. all depends on what the galvanized pipe is being used for.  if it's a drain pipe, the schedule 40, if it's for fence posts, then replace with new galvanized pipe.  it shouldn't be potable water, but if it is then go with pex.
