  1. Your question piqued my interest and it turns out to be strangely difficult to answer. American Funds doesn't offer any index funds, so you can't get anything to approximate the S&P 500. Their philosophy is not to mirror indexes, but to offer alternatives to them. Their web site doesn't even tell you which benchmarks their funds use.

I presume you're asking this because you're in a work-related plan like a 401(k) which uses American. I used to be in one and found American to be a good, solid, reliable fund company. (I'm not invested in them anymore, but it's not because I didn't like them.)

I poked around http://www.americanfunds.com and got several candidate funds I could offer up as suggestions, but I'm sure you've already done that. All I can suggest is contacting American and asking them.

  2. VFINX is a Vanguard fund.  For American Funds maybe the Fundamental Investors fund,

  3. VFINX for my money, if I were into index funds.
