Conventional energy:  oil, coal, natural gas, large-scale hydro.

Alternative energy:  wood, grass, ethanol from biomass, vegetable oils, solar energy, wind, small-scale hydro, etc.

The "cons" of the alternatives are that they are usually more expensive, are not well-supported by public policy, and often require a lot more personal attention.  The "pros" depend on what you're using and where and how you're using it.
