  1. there is a big debate raging in my village at the moment, there are two opposing websites. look at both for some contradictory views

one guy told me yesterday that turbines are only 12% efficient.

try centre for alternative technology for more facts

  2. Where there is wind, the wind farm is the way to go. But the wind doesn't blow 24/7 anywhere. So a good idea is to couple it with solar energy. This leaves you without power only during the dark hours when the wind doesn't blow.

  3. Wind farms are built in regions where wind studies show that there will be X amount of wind over a 2 or 5 year period.

But when it's windy is totally unpredictable.

Because of that, wind power cannot be relied upon for peak power - however the fluctuation in the wind patterns is within the fluctuation of baseload usage, and wind power is the cheapest source of power, so it's a great, renewable source of baseload power.

Estimates of how much of US electric consumption could be met with wind power range from 6% to 20%.     It's probably closer to 6% but right now wind is used to generate less than 1% of our power, so that's a moot point.
