I got a job offer from WesternGeco and Schlumberger. They wanted me to maintain their electomagnetic equipment on their vessels.

The job required 5 weeks on the ship and then 5 weeks off for the whole year. The training program would have been for 3-4 years. So I would have half the year off but the other half required me to be on a ship sailing the world from different ports.

I'm an electrical engineer so I can't answer completely on the petroleum side but the work is demanding and challenging. If you are a single person with no relationship or family attachments then go for it, otherwise it could be stressful.

I have a friend who worked on an off-shore rig. Within 1.5 years he saw 5 people die. Be aware that the work might be inherently dangerous.
