  1. use some wood and carboard and make a swing and a larrdor and colorer it to add some life to it that's all i can think of...:) have fun!

  2. I've been exploring the same topic!

I'd love to share a few of my findings with you:

    1) cargo net gym

This is a relatively simple play gym that can be achieved by knotting together cotton or sisal rope (or any other type that can be deemed safe, and of the appropriate diameter for your bird's feet) into a net, then hanging it up for your birds to explore and climb on! You can clip toys or add toy parts to the net's rungs for added entertainment value.

    2.) wooden clothes horse gym

You can also use other similar household objects. I would suggest wrapping the dowels with rope to increase the 'grip-ability' of the smooth wooden surface, and to help prevent any nasty falls that may occur.

    3.) pvc pipe play station

purchase appropriately sized diameter pipes from a home depot or similar store, and let your imagination take over!

    4.) the Atom

A homemade version of the atom can be made by wrapping hula-hoops in rope and then arranging them and tying them into place.

You can extend on any of these ideas or come up with your a completely fresh idea. It's up to your own creativity and taste!

    Good luck!

I wish you and your bird many years of joy and happiness together!

  3. Get a small plant, strip it of everything except the thick branches, uproot it and glue it onto a tray. Hold down the tray with bricks or bags filled with sand or water. Hang blocks of wood and make a swing by inserting nails on both sides of a horizontal piece of wood (the perch), but leave the nails hanging out a bit on the sides (about half a centimeter). Get some cord and attach it to the nails hanging out the perch's sides.

Hang the swing and blocks of wood on the branches, and hang lots of small stainless steel bells and cord on the branches. But you may need to replace the cord often as the parakeet may chew on it and break it. But that's the point, remember: a destroyed toy is an enjoyed toy. Make sure the wood and all materials is non-toxic; visit http://www.flyinggems.com to find list of things toxic to birds.
