Different speed, spin, cut-angle will result in different cueball objball interaction. It's simply impossible to practise every combination. If we only have a few hours a week or every other day, efficiency is the key. Some drills may let you improve slowly and some faster. Drills good for one may not be good for another one, but just equally likely, it might. What drills do you think are the most helpful to you?

  1. Master great response the only thing that I would mention is cue ball reaction (when you hit the cue ball & it makes contact with the object ball what is the residual effect) you must pay attenton to that.

I learnt the hard way it is not always smart to slam the cue ball 'cause once it comes of the object ball hard all "h**l" can break loose on the table & I have lost games due to the cue ball coming of the rail hard hit a group of balls & then potted the black early.

  2. I practice my English and play 9 ball.  This combo has been the most beneficial to me.

  3. Stance

If you do not practice the proper stance you will never become a really good player

    Bridge

Learn the proper good bridge (fingers), how to shoot when a ball is near a rail, how to jack up over object balls

    Stoke

Same story as stance..without a good stoke there is only so far you can go!

    Cutting

Learn how to cut balls in down near the corner pockets pockets..depending on the game 50% or more will be these shots

    Practice cutting into side pockets

Learn how to run a frozen ball down a rail..ball and rail at same time (if you have good control use running English)

Practice straight shots down the table (long straight shots are the most difficult shots)

    English

You most learn draw...No good player uses top spin for long or fast shots (you loose allot of control) draw is used 10 times more than top spin. Always draw a little if your shooting hard.

Practice trowing balls with right and left English, (you must lean how to throw balls or you will never be able to master position)

low right, center right, low left, center left (top spin is really only used on very special shots or if you want to follow with the cue.

Learn how to stop the cue ball in it tracks-.straight shot center ball (requires a bit of a stab stroke)

Use must learn how to draw the cue ball......I can draw the cue sometimes 3 rails...Yes I shoot great pool and still can draw a crowd if in a place where the people are into pool..I have a 6 rail shot has to be a good level fast table (I cut their eyes out, I bank like a crazy fool, I can put the cue ball on a dollar anywhere on the table)

Listen the real trick is to not have to think about the shot when you are shooting it....it has to become intuitive...(sure think about it before you shoot) and that cue has to become an extension of your body!

    Good luck!

Another tip the best players in the world are from The Philippines and guess what they all grew up playing (15 ball rotation) it'll teach you ever thing, position, kicking, bank, and on and on....very few people play it today. It's a tough game.  But become good at this game and you can play any game with mastery.

Any questions e-mail me.....get a book and some videos...and always play with people that are better than you and watch them! (just don't play for money)

  4. Master - Great advice you give.  One thing you mention that almost no amateur understands is throw.  Again and again, I see very experienced and solid amateur players try to conventionally cut the object ball when the cue and object ball are touching.  They just don't get it.  Maybe you could elaborate on some specific drills one could try to understand what is meant by "throw".  I could try to explain it but would prefer to defer to your advice and expertise for the benefit of anyone reading.
