  1. Assuming you're talking Plato here, since in his Republic he outlined five types of governments, declaring one superior to the other four. To some degree, he thought of these as a devolving process that governments could fall into as well, from most to least ideal.

Here they are, according to Plato (there are literally at least dozens other types of governments that have been attempted or dreamed of besides these):

    1) Aristocracy -- a system in which a ruling caste or family maintained all the control. In Plato's mind it represented the most efficiently and ideally organized form of government which is able to provide true justice most effectively. Athens had this form of government.

    2) Timocracy -- a system in which only people of honor may participate in government (the Greek word timokratia literally means "honor rule"), and usually meant property owners/soldiers/etc. Plato presents this form as the most desirable of the four unjust and inferior systems. Sparta most likely utilized this form of government.

    3) Oligarchy -- the word literally means "rule by the few", which is what an oligarchy is: the ruling group is even more narrow and exclusive than the previous two examples.

    4) Democracy -- Plato thought that a true democracy would devolve into an anarchy of mob rule and never be able to deliver on its promise for equal justice and rights for everyone.

    5) Tyranny -- a single person has gained control over the mob and restored order, but at the cost of sacrificing justice and rights for the personal whims and desires of the tyrant.

    Hope that helps!
