Question:

What really is the procedure for becoming a journalist?

I'm thinking about becoming a journalist, and I was wondering if through this it is possible to become a news reporter. Any idea how long it takes, and whether journalism is the correct route to take for reporting news, rather than writing it for a paper? How often can creative writing be used in this career? If there are any journalism majors who are answering this, would you recommend it? Are you enjoying having it as a major?

Thank you!

  1. Yes, journalism is the correct route. You can also use creative writing, though most creative writing programs are geared less toward the business side (e.g. - helping you get a job) than journalism programs.

I've been a journalist and while it can be enjoyable, this is not a great time to be a news reporter unless you are ready to focus on new media. Newspaper journalists are getting laid off by the thousands, and magazines are folding every week. So before you dive into becoming a news reporter, think about whether you're willing to adapt to ever-changing newsrooms. Because if you want to be a traditional print journalist, you're going to face an uphill battle, unfortunately, to find and keep a job. Good luck!

  2. Journalism is much less about creative writing than about asking the right questions.  It is about making sure not to be used as a tool of advertizing, a messenger.
