What receivers are compatible with a Bose Lifestyle 5 system?

I have a Bose Lifestyle 5 system that includes a receiver/CD-player, two multi-directional cube speakers, and a subwoofer. I was planning to get a new receiver and use the speakers and sub-woofer but my friend tells me that Bose speaker/subwoofer systems cannot be used on non-Bose receivers because Bose uses a proprietary surround-sound system. Is this true? I don't care about surround-sound right now, I just want to use my current speakers/subwoofer with a new receiever.

  1. The speakers should work regardless.

The questions will be the speaker specs, such as impedance, RMS wattage, and peak wattage.

The concern will be if the amplifier in the receiver may be too powerful for the speakers in this particular circumstance.

I would probably suggest selling the entire Bose system in one piece and just building your new system with new speakers.  You can get decent speakers at a good price from makes like JBL, Polk Audio, Infinity, or Klipsch.

  2. Yamaha, Pioneer, Kenwood, Denon
