  1. Phelps record is way better. years of training came together to produce the greatest sports effort in history. there are only a hand full of people who have even competed in 8 events in the olympics let alone medal in 8 events. a lot of people have played in that many baseball games. although they were not consecutive a baseball game is a baseball game.

and as for no competition what about a 1 hundreth of a second victory, was phelps just making it interesting. him being the best just adds to the greatness of what he did.

  2. RipkEn's streak reached 2632 games.

Phelps' mark, it appears, at least is gotten right in the details by the public, possibly by benefiting from extreme recentness.

  3. Cal's record.  Cal played every game for about 15 years.  There were times he never should have played, but he did anyway.

Michael Phelps has done what no Olympian has done before, but there is also no competition.  He is simply the best.

  4. i think phelps record is better, cal just had to bat once or be a pinch runner  to keep the streak going. how many games did ripken cheat in to keep the streak going, by batting once, or scoring as a pinch runner. phelps had to prepare alot more cuz more was at stake

  5. Oh dear Lord, I can't believe I'm going to defend Ripken, Yes his record is better. I can't even begin to think of how completely disproportionate it is to what Phelps did. Seriously, my mind is just too dumbfounded by the question to even think straight.

I hate Ripken, he's one of the most over-rated players ever, and wasn't as great as people think. 3000 hits? Big deal, you play that many games you better have 3000 hits. 400 homers? Put him in the outfield and nobody even notices.

Congratulations, I believe you are the first person to ever get me to defend Ripken.

  6. 2,131 consecutive games there is not another person within 200 games close 2 him. phelps is great he is the greatest swimmer ever but he didn't have 2 do it 2131 times or swim hurt like Cal had 2 play hurt

  7. cals record one day phelpss will either be tied ( most likely) or broken (not likely)

  8. Cal Ripkens because he had a great record and career. Follow this link http://www.ripkenbaseball.com/calripken/...

  9. Cal's record, he started it in 1982 and it continued well into the 1990's.

Phelps' record could someday be broken, but no one will touch Cal's.

  10. michael phelps 8 gold medals

it takes a lot more training and time to become what he has become

what cal did was amazing but all he had to do was show up

michael phelps cant just show up, he has to be prepared mentally and physically. There's alot more than just what we see on the tv

we dont see the practice that goes into it. Ex. eating healthy, working out, running, pool lengths etc.

So yes the 8 gold medals is definitly more impressive for me. Or as you put it better....

  11. Tough question, but I think Ripken's streak.

Phelps is an amazing swimmer, the best ever. His two close wins have been the most memorable moments of the Olympics. But the reason swimmers get so many medals is because of all the different strokes. If they treated running the same way you would have: the crawling race, the running backwards race, the run on your hands race....because of that, the giant medal hauls at the Olympics will always belong to swimmers. But it also diminishes their value a little because they get so many opportunities to win. (Phelps was in eight events, Usain Bolt will be in three, I think)

Both are reasons for Baltimore to feel very proud!

  12. Cal Ripkin Jr. He could have gotten injured and not been able to play but he did not he could have taken a day off but he did not.

  13. Ripken's record is crazy because of how long he played. He played through illness and injury. He never gave up. Michael Phelps has been training for years and competes against the best in the world.

Ripken was essentially competing against himself. Phelps competes against other swimmers.

    You just can't compare them.
