What relationship do ants have with a trumpet vine?

Vines are covered with ants that constantly roam the entire plant.

  1. The ants are eating aphids that are on the plant or they are eating the nector from the flowers. They may however simply be using it as a "highway" of sorts to get from point A to point B.


  2. Are the ants on my trumpet vine eating holes in the flower or is it something different tghat is doing this

  3. if there's aphids on the plant, they're 'milking' and herding them for the sweet honeydew they produce.... trumpet flowers , if it's blooming, are superb sources of sweet nectar and they'll pierce the base of the flower to get to it.... if it's not blooming, look for aphids  or mealy bugs (white stuff on the stems)
