What relief efforts did the local and federal government do to assist people people by the Great Depression?

They didn't have a lot of government help back then people made it on their own, not like today its so easy to go on welfare. Need more money, just have another kid. It is sickening, I think every woman on welfare should have Norplant (birth control) put in her arm so she can't have anymore children until she can support them.
