Question:

What rent song should i sing for an audition?

i am a 15 year old alto and i am going to audition for any part in my high school's production of Rent. i don't expect to get a lead part, but it's my favorite musical of all time so i am forcing myself to audition. the audition is closed and is in two months, so i would like to start practicing a song now. also, the info sheet says specifically to show off the voice (acting and dancing auditions are separate). any suggestions for a song would be great. also tips would be awesome!

thanks! =]

  1. Yay! That's great that you are an alto and trying out. ^_^

Actually, Idina Menzel is an alto, but you don't really want to sing like her on the soundtrack because that would kill your voice.

Anyways, the Song that you pick all depends on who you want to be in the musical. It doesn't matter whether you are expecting to get a lead or not.

Life Support would be a really good one to sing if you want a very small part. Seasons of Love would be an excellent one if you want to just be in the chorus.

Out Tonight or even the beginning to Without You- Mimi

Take Me Or Leave Me - Joanne

Take Me Or Leave Me or Over The Moon (People like to see if you can be crazy too) - Maureen

Don't drink milk or practice too much before your audition. Milk will coat your throat and make you go flat. Since you are an alto, to hit any of the higher notes always just remember to think about 'over shooting' them. Practicing too much will tire out your voice.

Make sure your dance audition is AFTER you sing, because again you will get tired from your dance audition.

  2. seasons of love! that song rocks!

  3. I'd recommend not singing something from the show itself - never a good idea unless it's specifically asked for.  Good on you for getting organised so early!  A great audition song for RENT is "Come To Your Senses" from Tick Tick Boom; you could also look at one of the songs from Little Shop of Horrors (probably "Somewhere That's Green" would be best); "Heaven Help My Heart" from Chess, or something from Godspell - there are lots of great songs (and hardly used) in that show.  Don't go anywhere near anything that's currently big on Broadway - Wicked, Hairspray, Avenue Q, Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera or Grease, and stay away from Andrew Lloyd Webber as well!  Break a leg!

  4. one song glory.

if the audition has songs from rent only, it will be a welcome change for the auditioners to hear the gender juxtaposition. They will infer the risk you take and think you would be able to risk it for the stage.
