What research projects could combine history and GIS?

I want to do a research project using GIS software and applications that answers a historical question or deals with a historic topic.

Anyone who has been where I am can appreciate the annoyance of not having an idea when you NEED one.

2. Map your family history.

3. Map Lewis and Clark's journey or Trail of Tears.

4. Map an Empire's growth

5. History of a particular business' expansion

6. Particular demographic changes from census years.
