My favorite is Barrio Chino on Broome and Orchard in the LES.  It's more of a mexican tapas place - which is more than fine since you will wanting to be spending all your money on their awesome margaritas.  I recommend the steak tacos.

it's a very cool spot, with alot of neighborhoody people from the LES hanging out there.

A while back, I ate at a place called senor swanky's. It was a dive, but the food was excellent, and the prices were decent. I think they have 2 locations in NYC, check it out!

Never been there, but I find your question interesting.  In Texas, we have a great Mexican Food restaurant every few blocks, I think.  Yum!

My favorite is Tulcingo Del Valle in h**l's Kitchen on Tenth Avenue and 48th Street.  Del Valle is very plain, very, very clean, the food's delicious and the cooking is from Puebla, so they have a lot of dishes that you won't find in most New York Mexican restaurants.  The prices are unbelievably inexpensive - the most expensive thing on the menu is seafood soup - it's $15.  Portions are very generous - for about $12 you get a very generous portion of garlic shrimp served with rice and beans and a basket of homemade tortillas.  Appetizers are $3 or less.  They have specials posted on the wall daily.  If you're there when they're serving chicken pipian (a sauce made from pumpkin seeds), order it.  Service is friendly, but is usually very slow.
