What restrictions are there in relation to hand luggage when travelling from alicante airport back to the uk?

Exactly the same as the outbound. Security and or hand baggage restrictions are set by the airline dependent on the city pair being flown. Not on the airport itself.

Just put everything in your suit case or mail it to your destination -- or do without it and leave it at home.

Its just a few hours. There is nothing you will need in that time.  

I would not bring anything more than a plastic Walmart bag on board.  And be prepared to abandon even that!
