hello,

I live in IN so will not be using it for whitetail. I would like a good reliable rifle for the following. Target, Coyote, and I am planning a big game trip such as elk or caribou. What do you think would be the best rifle. Make/model or caliber?

Thanks

  1. AK47

  2. The .308 caliber is a great all around caliber. From target shooting to elk hunting. Second on the list I would look into the .270 caliber, another great all around caliber.

  3. it depends how big a boy u r. A  25.06 Remington would be a good choice for a smaller person and a Remington 30.06 would be a a good choice for a little bigger person. thats a good choice for caribou or elk

    A .223 or a 22 .250 would be great pick for coyotes

And a smaller gun would be good for targets, such as as .22 Marlin 60 or 66 model- or perhaps a black powder match gun of ur choice would be good for targets sports

                                                    i hope i was helpful

  4. For target and coyote all you need is a small rifle in something like 223, 22-250, 243, or 22 hornet.  If you want to go for elk or caribu then I'd go with a 30-06, 7mm mag, or 45-70.  Accurate bolt actions in a Remington ot a Savage can be found on the auction sites.  check out guns america or gun broker.com.

I like a lever action Marlin.

You may also consider an Encore for handgun hunting.  Tjen all you would need is to change the barrel to change caliber.  They can be extreamly accurate and enough power for whatever you hunt. Check out Gary Reeder's site for Encores and other customs.

  5. The tried, true, tested, and proven since 1906, the 30-06 because you have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from.* Buy Remington, Savage or Winchester Brand in a bolt action for best action, strength, and accuracy.*

  6. For target and coyote, I would say .223, .243, or any 6mm....As for bigger game...the 30-06 can take any big game animal in North America. If you just want one rifle, get the30-06 and find a bunch of different size bullets to see which one works the best for you. Remington, Savage, Marlin, Winchester...It really doesn't matter, they all make fine rifles. It all depends on how much that you want to spend. Whatever you decide for rifles, be sure and spend at least as much on the scope as you do on the rifle.

  7. You're probably not going to be able to do both of those with one rifle unless you get something like a Thompson Contender or Encore. For target shooting and/or hunting coyotes a .22 LR, .22 WMR, or .223 would fill the bill nicely. Those rounds are relatively inexpensive, have mild recoil, and are quite accurate inside their range envelopes. They're certainly appropriate for anything up to Coyote inside their range envelope. For hunting large game animals like elk or caribou you're going to want something larger and more powerful, like a .308, .30-06, 7.62x54R, .300 Winchester Magnum, or .45/70 Government. Granted you could use any of the large game cartridges for target shooting, but they will have a substantial recoil which would make prolonged target sessions uncomfortable. Unfortunately the cartridges which you could use for hunting large game won't work well on coyote. They're simply too much gun for coyote and may over-penetrate without expanding properly. They'll certainly do more pelt damage than a more appropriate small-bore varmint round. So... Unless you get a rifle with interchangeable barrels, you're not going to be able to do both of these in one rifle.

  8. calibers: 243, 270, 308,30-06,7.62x54R....

    makes: Browning, Savage, Remington, Winchester...

There are to many to name. You will probably narrow them down by price. Browning is one of the top of the line guns, military surplus will be at the lower end. Russian bolt actions are going for under $100.

  9. For deer any center-fire rifle caliber .243 or larger will do ya.  I like the Remington 700 series but the Ruger 77 is great also.  So is the Browning A-bolt and others.  For Elk you need at the very least a .270 Winchester but a .30-06 would serve you better.  Same for Caribou.  All these calibers will work on coyote as long as you don't care to keep the pelt.  If you want to keep the pelt use a .22 LR and go with head shots or a .223 with FMJ.  NOTE:  The .223 is too small for deer.

    Happy hunting.

  10. For elk and caribou, the bottom would probably be a .270 with a lot of time at the range to make sure you can get a very accurate shot.

For coyote, anything over .30 caliber would be overkill and a waste of money.

I have a Mossberg 100 chambered for the .270 winchester that I paid about $250 at Walmart. I also got a reloading press and accessories from Cabelas for about $100. By reloading your own bullets, you can get better matched rounds, which will help with accuracy. Also, I can reload premium bullets for less than $.50 each, as opposed to paying $1 or more for each round.

  11. If you didn't want to keep the coyote pelts just kill them then i suggest the 270. win in the winchester model 70. It is an amazing rifle for elk, caribou, moose, deer, coyote.

  12. .308.....  Its a common miltary round that is quite popular with F-Class target shooters. Its also a very popular hunting cartridge...... This ammunition can be had in bulk and mil surplus sometimes at really decent prices, so target shooting can be cheap......

  13. One rifle really doesn't fill the bill.

For plinking and informal target shooting, I'd suggest a good .22 LR rifle.  If you like semi-autos, a Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60 would be hard to beat.  If you like lever-guns, a Marlin Model 39 is absolute perfection.  Any bolt-action repeater from Marlin, Remington, Winchester, or Savage would be a good choice.

For coyotes, something along the lines of a .22-250, or a .243 Win would be good.  I like Browning Lever-Action Rifles, the famous BLR.  It can be had in a variety of calibers, including .243 Win.

For elk, or caribou, I'd suggest a .308 as minimum, and my favorite caliber, the .358 Win, or a .30-'06, all of which can be had in the BLR.
