i am a target shooter at my local Rod and Gun Club. I have been shooting for Three years W/ an Anshutz .22Lr and two with a Winchester .22Lr. I am now at sharpshooter Bar 8 (Only two away from Expert). But i am getting tired of 22's at 50' and have nothing at home to fool around with. I am turning 17 in a month which means i cannot participate in "Junior League'' in a year. But my mother got her FID. So this begs the question; What rifle would be durable, cheap, and fun without hitting the wallet to buy bullets?

  2. Your question starts with you are a target shooter. Great you your not a rank beginner. You are looking more toward quality (soon to be 17 on a budget) and looking to get something more than a .22 lr rifle.

Second parameter is ammo cost. Center fire ammo costs more than good match .22lr bullets that you already use. Buying in bulk saves money buying surplus saves even more but usually surplus is not the highest quality.

What are you looking to spend? Ruger Mini-14 or AR-15's are all the rage and great investments. They cost a lot more to feed than the 22. There are great bolt action rifles in 223, 22-250, 220S, 243 and on up the scale. We need a little more info to zero in on your next rifle.

  3. If you're not looking for accuracy, both the SKS and AK are cheap, fun, and rugged. The rounds are also some of the cheapest centerfire rounds on the market.

  4. Can't you back up the target to 50 yards rather than 50 feet? I can't think of a better waste of time than shooting shotgun shells at that distance.

I'm with 'dom though on a new rifle --- 17hmr. 12 bucks is the regular price for 50 rounds and most people stock up when they are on sale for $10.

Marlins and Savages can be had for 250 dollars and shoot well under 1" at 100 yards right out of the box (assuming calm wind conditions).

  5. chey tac m-200 .408

  6. Your first consideration should be what ammunition to use? - not the rifle... Ammo can get real expensive if you purchase the wrong rifle... The most cost effective ammunition to use would be .223 or .308.  The .223 would be the first choice and the .308 the second... In bulk this stuff is fairly cheap....

.223 and .308 is commonly used by the police, military, hunters, F-class target shooters, security contractors, etc, etc.......

The .223 is the more cost effective of the two...... Consider a Remington or Savage bolt action rifle chambered in one of these cartridges.....
