What exactly was the Reign of Terror? And why was the guillotine used?

  1. it was an extremely barbaric period in European history/world history in which horrendous things were done to people.  from torture to rape all in an effort to make surfs conform to the royalties rules.  I suppose the guillotine was used for is barbaric nature of chopping off people's heads.

  2. The "Reign of Terror" was a part of the French Revolution. The lower class (the prolateriate) rose up to remove the upper and middle class. The idea was to totally remove the aristocracy by killing them. How did you kill them? Beheading them using the guillotine. Anyone who was a friend of the upper classes or opposed the revolution was in danger, too. The problem became that if you had a dispute with anyone you could accuse them of any anti revolution activity and they would loose their head. It was very terrifying.

    Question judges decisions - loose your head.

    Question the use of the guillotine - loose your head.

    Say that an aristocrat was worthy of mercy - loose your head.

    Be suspected of helping anyone 'questionable" - loose your head.

    Not a happy time to live.
