What role do landfill sites play regarding water quality?

Landfills try to stay away from water sources but I still think that some of the garbage is seeping into the ground and going to our water supply. Its still a good idea to filter water from the sink or buy bottled water if you live near a land fill.

Landfills in the USA dont do anything to our water quality.  Unless you live on the opposite side of the earth.  Over time, the hazardous chemicals seep thru the earth all the way to the other side.  So, the chemicals in the landfills in China are seeping into our water quality.  I use heavy plastic under my gardens to keep the toxins from China or where ever from entering my soil.

Landfills can seriously affect water quality because they can sometimes leak incredibly harmful toxins/ chemicals.  Although modern landfill designs require that they use many layers of different materials to line the bottom of the landfills, they still are capable of leaking.  One common cause of leaking landfills is through rainfall- the rain pours down through the landfill and carries toxic chemicals away with it.  Rain or no rain, the toxic liquid that leaks out is called leachate, and it can seep into aquifers, underground layers of rock containing most of our ground water.  In areas where landfills are not designed properly and have inadequate linings, water supplies have a much higher chance of becoming contaminated.
