What role does social order play in American society?

I think it plays a huge role.  I feel that status is very important in American society.  People's occupations and material belongings are displays of status.  Status doesn't mean only acceptance by greater society, but sometimes even idolization or envy.  The social order is so strong in American society, and it is perpetuated greatly by the media.

American society seems very hierarchical to me. With the upperclass, doing it`s best to keep the lower classes down, so as to fortify their own position. If it played no role, you could oppose just anyone no matter their position.
