  1. Since you referred to horses and corn then you would be referring to the mid-west great plains region.  Latitude wise it is above the tropic of cancer so greater than 23 degrees and below the arctic circle so more of the region does not have perpetual frozen tundra.  To the west is the Rockey Mountains and to the east the Appalachians.  So it is sort of a protected bowl within North America.  Being relatively flat land with a good amount of rainfall the area is conductive to the growing of grasses and grains.  Corn could be considered a grain.  As far as horses, the grassy plains and wide open spaces make an ideal location for their grazing herding lifestyle.  Just like the great bison.
