Hey, I am 16 years old, 6ft tall and i weigh around 175 pounds. I am thinking about joining my school team but i don't now where to try out for. I do weights regularly and i can do the 100metre sprint in 11 seconds. I really enjoy tackling but i also enjoy running at people and scoring, i am also a strong kicker.

I have no idea which position would be best for me so please help.

Thanks, Matt

  1. Based on your weight and speed, you could play many positions. A second row or inside centre would most probably be the position for you (if you were on my team) but it also depends on what your school team needs.

Though in most cases the majority of the "running and scoring" is typically done by the backs.

As a forward, who is able to both make himself available whilst covering his position will be able to score a lot of tries.

  2. wing and if your good at kicking maby fullback

  3. 2nd cent re , 1st cent re or Fly half if your passing is top class. Let your coach  guide you in terms of picking a position.

  4. Ok, I'm going to go against what everyone has said here and say you should go for flanker or 8th man.

This is why I think so:

At 16 years old, you're pretty tall and big for your age and likely to be bigger than other boys your age. This will give you a physical advantage over your competitors which bodes well for playing flanker/8th man.

Plus you say that you like tackling and flankers make loads of tackles particularly when the ball is kept tight with the opposition attacking around the ruck.

I think with your physical presence and amazing speed (100m in 11 seconds is lightning for a 16 year old) means you'll dominate in that position.

You also say that you love running at people at scoring. Well, that's a big of part of playing flanker or 8th man - especially from a scrum situation.

If I could compare you to an international player, then I would say Pierre Spies of the Springboks (provincially he plays for the Bulls, the current Super14 champions).

He is large and also quick. He used to play wing before the Bulls coach made a great decision and put him in as 8th man where he set the stage alight (He was unfortunate to miss the World Cup with injury).

  5. Ask your coach at your training session.I would say winger or centre.

  6. I think you would make a good winger & back up kicker I dont

know whether you are more suited to left or right though however a left footed kicker is allways an asset

  7. Matt,

At your age with your size you will probably end up in the forwards. If you have good hands and good speed I would state a preference for the back row (flanker, #8).

If you don't grow much more, you may eventually transition into the backs (probably the Centers).

    Good Luck!

  8. you should go down to training and the coach will help you out

there always looking for new players and wont turn down someone who is genrenly interested

    i would say centre though

  9. Matt, have a look at the Springbok number 8 Pierre Spies - he plays Super and Currie Cup rugby for the Bulls, but was sidelined for the World Cup through injury.  He's been employed as a wing and has tons of speed, but he's also tall and quite muscular so he works very well in the loose forwards.  He scored some excellent tries against the English when they toured South Africa before the 2007 Tri-Nations.  Watch him play, he may be a role model for you.  YouTube has clips of some excellent tries he's scored.

  10. Well given your body type, it's a tough call.  One the one hand, at your age with your height you'd have a tremendous advantage as a lock forward, the primary competitor in the line-out (where you'll be lifted into the air for the ball.)  In addition, you also will be responsible for providing the power in the scrum, and making tackles against other big forwards.  Personally, if i were you, i'd be here, but i'm biased because i'm a front-row forward and the prospect of a tall fast lock is fantastic

On the other hand, with your speed, kicking, and tackling skills, then perhaps you'd fair well at fullback, which combines all of those things.  Since the fullback is the last line of defense you have to be able to run down the opposition wingers (the fastest guys on the pitch) and also be able to tackle them when it happens.  Plus, you'll need to be able to kick tactically when the opposition kicks at you.

Between the two, i think you'd get to utilize your skill set more at fullback, however, given your height, you'll probably end up as a lock

  11. Probably Flanker or Fly-Half. You'll get plenty of action and if you're a good kicker you could try being a centre.

  12. If you can run really fast i recon the wing

  13. i think that full back or wing is the position for you. with full back you need to be quick and have a good tackle. you also need to be able to clear your lines with a big kick or run at them and gain some distance. for winger it is important that you can tackle and also you seem to be quick so that would be a good position for you

  14. 2nd centre out and out! Your basically perfect for that position! You`ve got all the atributes that any great 2nd centre has all you need is to learn the game more!
