Planning a trip for this winter, chichen itza is on the list. I am bringing my 6 and 8 year old along too.

  1. Chichen Itza for sure.  Coba is a good one and totally different from Chichen Itza--Coba's more jungley.  The kids will enjoy a stop a Xel-ha.  Tulum is small but has a nice little beach.  If you get to the other side of the peninsula, Uxmal is impressive.  And if you get as far as the state of Chiapas, Palenque is my favorite archaeological site in Mexico.

The link below show all the ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula.

  2. viva mexico

  3. With a six and eight year old, unless they are terribly patient and interested in antiquities, I think you're going to have a very long day at Chichen Itza.  Ruins are great there, but the drive to get to them from most anywhere is very long.  If you're staying near Cancun or Playa del Carmen, I'd recommend Tulum as it is nearby and the kids can enjoy a break in the ocean there.  Some ruins that are smaller, but almost equally as impressive as Chichen Itza are those at Ek Balam.  The drive is not quite as long (depending where you're staying, of course) but the size of the ruins are much more within the attention range of most people, including children.  C/I can get pretty overwhelming even for most adults!

Good luck with your decision and have a great time!
