  1. The definition is:

"Colonialism is the extension of a nation's sovereignty over territory beyond its borders by the establishment of either settler colonies or administrative dependencies in which indigenous populations are directly ruled or displaced." This has recently been modified to mean that anyone having European ancestry (no matter how many 100's of years ago) living outside of Europe is guilty of colonialism & should be murdered by anyone whose ancestors were there, or nearby, first.

  2. ed 031639 's answer is brilliant. Let me add another feature. Canada, Australia and New Zealand are colonies or not? In the British empire (before 1947) there were so many grades of their landed possessions. At the bottom are 'colonies' Kenya colony), 'crown colonies', 'protectorates', 'protected territories' and 'condominiums' a bit higher and so on. Dominions, of which I mentioned some above still enjoying that status are British dependencies who can vote out of that status to become free republics. South Africa was accorded dominion status in 1910 but gave it up (1960?) as a protest against the opposition to its 'Apartheid' policy.

In this scenario the above mentioned entities can be called colonial possessions. The native populations have been decimated or emasculated and their lands have been taken over. This is worse then 'colonialism'.

  3. Examples.

    Puerto Rico

    Guam

    U.S. Virgin Islands, etc.
