  1. The other poster gave some good tips.  I would add:  use common sense, don't go walking around by yourself late at night, in crowded areas keep your hand on your bag, and don't wear clothes or jewelry that make you stand out or look like you have money.

  2. I have visited Paris several times and never had a problem.  None of my family or friends (who also visited many times) have ever had a problem in Paris either.  However, pickpockets and thieves are everywhere in the world, and are alleged to be a problem in certain parts of Paris - such as around Montmartre.

It is always best to reduce your risk by carrying valuables (cash, credit cards, ID) somewhere other than the obvious. Purses, wallets, and small backpacks are the obvious targets of thieves so don't carry anything in them you can't afford to lose.

I recommend you get an around-the-waist security belt and keep most of your cash, credit cards, and ID in it.  The belt is basically a zippered or velcro pouch with an elastic band that goes around your waist under your clothing.  Keep a little cash, one credit card, and a secondary ID (NOT you passport) in your pocket, purse, or wallet and leave the rest in the belt until needed.  The belts are sold everywhere that sells luggage, and should also be in the shops at the airport.  Cost is about $15.

Make photocopies of your passport photo page and the credit cards you will take.  Leave one copy at home and pack the other in your checked luggage.  Also scan copes of your passport (photo page), plus the credit cards you will take, and send the images to yourself via e-mail.  That way you will have access to the information if the items are lost or stolen.

  3. Keep your bags in front of you in airport, Metro, etc.  Buy a money belt or my daughter and I like the ones that have a lanyard that goes around your neck (their long enough to tuck the actual money part into your pants also, but easier to get out when you need it).

  4. keep valuables on your person i didn't have any problems but i went up the eiffel tower and it the lift was packed and some people looked really fidgety so put your stuff into zipped pockets.

  5. can't be as bad as hami hill can it? lost my car radio like 5 times.

  6. don't look like a trourist, learn french if you don't know it and i guess just stay out of dark alleys and the red light district.
