if you live in the dorms and have to share bathrooms its good to put together a bathroom kit -- something you can carry in and out with you.  a bucket works fine -- they sell stuff you can use at bed and bath stores. always wear shower shoes because weird stuff grows on the floors of public bathrooms.  

a short list of necessities would probably include a laptop and something to carry it in.

When I was a Freshman they just made us get a notebook/binder for each class with loose sleeve paper...and the books for that class. The teachers should tell you like the first day of school...thats what happens at my school anyways

I dont know about your school, but at mine all the high school teachers give you a list of supplies you need during the first week of school. And i would suggest bringing paper and something to write with on the first day of school, you may need it.

pencils (preferably mechanical so you don't have to worry about them breaking, finding an old pencil sharpener.  but you can get regular pencils and your own sharpener).  pencils are always #2 unless noted.  

rest of your courses

a few good pens.  regular stick pens are fine.  ball points may bleed and smudge.  DO NOT use colors.  Blue or Black only.

A calculator.  Preferably TI-83 if you plan on taking advanced math ever

book bag to put it all in (a cute messenger bag may work)

erasers.  Preferably the white erasers, the pink ones can be harsh, smudge and rip

some people stand by binders.  I always hated them because they broke.  Personally, i got a bunch of those folders that closed and then got binder tabs to divide my notes.  but whatever works for you.  Just some way to organize

Index cards, hole puncher, and "loose leaf rings"  you'll hole punch a corner of your index cards, and use the ring to keep them together.  trust me, you'll thank me.

I would get unlined index cards but it doesn't really matter.  this is great for studying, especially language courses.  remember, you can always cut your index cards in half (esp for vocab) or even smaller, so that you use less (cheaper that way)

*edit: thanks julez.  and a planner.  You don't have to get an official one.  I got the same ones as my teachers, it worked pretty well.  however you can track assignments best.
