  1. have him build a roller coaster, like out of pvc pipe, and stuff like that, it can only be 40 inches high, 50 as the width, and use a marble.

and at the end or the coaster, place a flat-sided domino at the end, and when the marble comes to the end or the coater, it cant knock the domino over.

its sooo fun, and a real challenge to figure out all the curves and stuff.

  2. here's what i'd do, tell him to put potted plants (from the same seed bag) near windows in your house, but, seperate from each other.

then gather up some radios with cd players, now, make a bunch of music cds, one with classic rock (led zeppelin, rush and guns n roses_ make one with rap ( like, 50 cent, usher and lil john, or whatever). one with classical music (beethovan, bach and vivaldi). one with jazz (I don't know any jazz artists, sorry). and one with death metal (cannibal corpse, pig destroyer and mayhem)

then play the music  to the plants 24/7 and see which plants grow the best.

I think that'd be cool, but it might be difficult getting all the boomboxes...

  3. REALLY challenging?  make him do a project on siphons

  4. maybe a rocketry project or a trebuchet (like a catapult) or a bridge project

here are some links that may help get science thoughts running-

  5. what color birdhouses attract the most birds

  6. I like the bride design idea, however, if he's never built bridges before...I wouldn't test which type of wood holds the best.

Bridge design is extremely difficult, and if he chooses the wrong design, he's not going to get anywhere.

I would let him choose 3 types of bridge designs and build each.  Then, test which is the best design.

Engineers have basically all agreed on the best type of design (which is for your son to research).  It will definitely hold the most.  There are all sorts of bridge design projects on line.

    Search "lesson plans bridge design".

  7. How about bridge building. Using the same design for a bridge and make three different bridges using three different kinds of wood and test with pounds of sand it is challenging and fun.

  8. a tesla turbine out of cds!

not too hard either... but very entertaining
