How Do We Know That Evolution Has Occurred?

The evidence for evolution has primarily come from four sources:

1.     the fossil record of change in earlier species

2. the chemical and anatomical similarities of related life forms

3. the geographic distribution of related species

4.   the recorded genetic changes in living organisms over many generations

It is supported by almost any organism in biology. All species have evolved during their existence. I would say that the best well-known example is bacteria gaining resistance to antibacterial medications. We have to keep taking stronger and stronger antibiotics because the bacteria are getting stronger. We are selecting the strong ones. Also, it is known that we can selectively "breed" animals and plants for ideal characteristics for farming (more meat, greater yield, etc.), so why couldn't the environment cause the same type of process to occur, especially when survival in the natural world

is not an easy task for most creatures.

Evolution is NOT an origin of life theory. It says nothing about how species arise (through God or otherwise), only that they change after arising. Quite frankly, a discussion of evolution is just like a discussion of physics, there's no reason to mention God. You are just observing the process. No one would say, "there's no gravity, it's God pushing you down". You can discuss gravity or evolution regardless of your religious affiliations. When people start invoking God in discussions of evolution, it's like comparing apples and oranges.

If you want to see natural selection and evolution in action just take a look at diseases.  AIDS, ebola, the flu...all evovle constantly!  That is why those types are hard to treat.  We find a way to kill or get rid of one virus/bacteria and its descendents all have largely different genetics.  The ones that are still susceptible die and the ones that are not surrvive to reproduce and spread on their version of the genes.

Basically all of biology.  The genetic evidence alone is enough to make it a sound scientific theory.  But there is lots more with vestigial organs, comparative anatomy and biochemistry, speciation, and homologous structures.  And this is just the biological evidence.  There is also archaeological, experimental, and observable evidence.

In short, statistical analysis of the two types of DNA (nuclear and mitochondrial) along with phylogeny, paleontology, plate tectonics, and biology.  Common sense doesn't hurt either.  Also systems theory, genetics, cosmology.. etc.

It's hard to pinpoint a "best" because the true strength of the theory is in its multidisciplinary corroboration.

The best support is the fact that a lot of very different kinds of evidence all support it.
