  1. Genetic linkage analysis is used for this often using SNP's (single nucleotide polymorphisms). When looking at ancestral linkage, mitochondrial DNA often proves more useful than nuclear DNA because it is entirely maternally derived and thus can be followed more directly. Hope this helps.
