The best and most cheap I've found so far is either travelocity or Expedia. They even match the lowest fare there is. They give you flights in the world so you will not have any problem looking for flights to South America. They also give you some choices of departure flights if they see your point of embarkation is more expensive. Now, if you are travelling straight to Chile, try www.kekastravel.com which is a chilean agency in the US with excellent offers and bargains.

Use travelocity, hotwire, expedia, cheaptickets etc to determine which airlines fly where you want to go, then check the airlines' homepages.  We sometimes find better deals that way.  Good luck...enjoy your trip!

Besides browsing on the common websites like travelzoo, Depending on where you are traveling to- I would also look on the national airline of the country. For instance if you are flying to Colombia, their airline is called "Avianca".
