On our buses it was a seniority thing. They older the grade, the farther back you sat. The back was then the default best place to be because the "cool older kids" sat there. However, if I remember right, the back is also where the most diesel fumes accumulate in the bus cabin, so it might not be so great after all.

Well that dumb we all know its the back.  It's like a little party with the back 4 seats that no one else was invited too.  Unless your cool enough to get an invite back there.  Ahhhhhh the good ol' days

Most kids like the back beacuse it is the bumpiest! When they go over a bump for some reason when you are in the back and you go over a bump you will get more air. Also they are away from the bus driver, so they can talk without being overherad by him/her.
