I will be traveling abroad soon, living in Berlin and hopefully traveling to Prague, Amsterdam, etc. I am a 19 year old female who will be alone most of the time, and I'm worried about what I would do should I feel the need to protect myself against someone. I am wondering if there is some sort of self defense product I can buy (like pepper spray, stun guns/tasers, personal alarms, etc.) that Is legal for use in Europe, specifically in Germany, and how I can get one.

Also, if any one has any thoughts in general on the safety of Berlin, I would love to hear them.

Thank you very much!

  1. Berlin is a wunderbar ;-) city, and you'll love it.  I'm American, but I live in a small "village" near Hannover (almost 5 years now).  As for self defense products, I really don't know of any that are legal in Germany.  Possessing such things is something I'd be very careful about doing.  However, the crime rate is pretty mild here.  As long as you're not out & about during odd hours and in the wrong part of town, you should be fine.  Just use common sense and enjoy Germany!

  2. Now first of all, in general, Europe is a very safe place. I'm not quite sure how it works in Prague, but Berlin and Amsterdam are both very safe.

Only few self defence products are legal in Europe. Such as personal alarms (because they don't hurt anyone) or pepper sprays (because they don't have any long-term consequences. Tasers for example, are not legal, since they actually can kill people if one doesn't know exactly how to use them.

Personal alarms you should be able to get in a common super market. About the pepper sprays, I'm not sure. You could try it in some shop which sells guns and knifes and all that stuff, they will also have pepper sprays.

However, as I already mentioned before, Europe is much safer than the U.S. and if you don't behave REALLY stupid, nobody will do you any wrong. Though, IF you want to buy a personal defence product, buy it in Europe and not in America, cuz you might get in trouble with the guys at the airport.

  3. everything is allowed in selfdefence

  4. Well, the fun ones aren't legal  :(
