Question:

What sensor has a 3800 acting like it needs a fuel pump? Crank?

I have a 98 Riviera that wouldn't start back up yesterday. It's acting as if it needs a fuel pump, but that's new. If I hold the gas I can force it to start, but it's always a rough idle and dies down soon after.

After the battery was recharged from trying to start it the oil light and temp light remains on (very faint), even with the key out of the ignition.

It has spark and fuel.

Help! What could it be?

  1. fuel filter would be my first guess which need to be change about once a year add a bottle of fuel treatment every few months... and after this id have it scan and the charging system check

  2. Sounds like it could be the ECM (YIKES!!)  The ECM controls all that.  Best thing to do is to take it to a dealer and have them check it out to pinpoint the problem.

  3. check the TPS (throttle position sensor) and map sensor (manifold air pressure).

  4. Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator which is on the fuel rail. If there is gas in the vacuum line replace the fuel pressure regulator. $50 fix and it's a common problem.
