  1. (*) Good quality shafts and grips; cheap clubs have commercial grade shafts.  The shaft is the engine that drives the golf swing.

(*) Clubhead material; 431 stainless or better in good quality clubs.  With cheap clubs.. you don't know what you are going to get.

(*) Tighter manufacturing tolerances.  Typically a 5 iron head, will weigh 254 grams.  Cheap clubs, you might get a 5 iron head that weighs 248 grams and you end up with a 5 iron that just plain sucks.  There is no "build consistancy" with a cheap set of golf clubs; whereas the big name manufacturers tolerance is around +/- 2 to 3 grams .

(*) Quality control - Cheap clubs.. its basically "cut & glue".  The big names mainly "cut & glue" , but there are options to order your clubs built to your specifications, lengths and swingweights.

(*) Warranties: Cheap clubs .. yeah right... doesn't exist

  2. um, commercials, and everyones idea. Technically speaking, there better, but its hard t on otice the difffrence, only on wedges.

  3. the stricter standards to which they are made. quality of materials. there's not a big difference except in the ones marketed as clones. they care more about looking like them, than performing like them.

seriously tho, the biggest difference is the amount of money big brands like Callaway, TM, Ping, etc put into Research and Development and Marketing. That cost gets picked up by the consumer.

  4. Many high income golfers trade clubs frequently.  Buy a set of used clubs from the classifieds or your network of friends.  Remember, the seller is not in need of top dollar for the clubs that he tossed in favor of new set.  Some golf junkies really think a new set of clubs will make that much difference in their game.  Used is the way to go if you can access that special market of constant switchers of clubs.  At your local course.

  5. For you, the consumer, it is most likely the price.  But if you go back a few model seasons, you can pick up a quality set of Callaway or Taylor Made irons for about the same price as a new set of "cheap" ones.  Keep in mind that even reputed club makers make crappy models sometimes.

  6. Some clubs are forged the most expensive, but very easy to bend. Then cast clubs are your most forgivin and available. Finally there is your inexpensive clubs. These are made of multiple metals such as Zinc, and other metals they will bend over a short period of time and tend to snap at the hossle, but with very little use usually sold in box sets.

  7. A good club is the right weight, balanced, aerodynamic, cool looking, and easy to swing.
