Recently, my friend accidentally walked out of the school library with a book not checked in by the library without setting of the alarms. I am curious what actually sets off these alarms.

  1. there's a little siganl maker the size of a wire in the spine of the book (usually).  when the librarian rubs the spine on the mat on the desk it demagnitizes the wire and doesn't set the alarm off.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Inside each book is a hidden bar code. Sometimes they are spottable and other times not. They contain an alarm which, unless they have been registered on the system as 'lent out', they will trigger the alarm as the book leaves with the thief.

To avoid the alarm going off, take the book to the counter and get the person behind the desk to check it out as 'on loan'.

    Good luck :-)

  4. I dont think library books are tagged - just have to trust folk sometimes

  5. at our library we put in little magnetic stickers that would set it off.
