What s*x are my finches?

My brother gave me a zebra finch. It is solid white with a red orange beak. No other markings. I thought it might be lonely so I bought a pair of zebras from the pet store. These two look exactly the same....solid white, with black tear markings around the eyes. No cheek or other markings. They all get along great, and squeek and make their noises. I just don't know if I have males or females. I don't want any babies, so should I take out the nest? Or do I have all boys/all girls??

  1. Bloodtest is the only reliable way I know of.

  2. You need to have your birds DNA gender-tested by a vet to make sure which is a girl or boy. Since you don't want them mating, taking the nest is a start, but if the birds want to mate, they'll go ahead and do it anyway.

  3. A common fault with Whites is that the cheek feathers are too thin, so that you can see through them and they're not orange like other Males.

With zebra finches you can tell the difference by looking at their beaks. The male will have a red beak and the female will have an orange beak.

    Hope this helps

  4. A male with have reddish orange legs and beaks (more red than orange) and they'll "sing" whereas female's beaks will be more of a regular orange color and they might "beep" but they won't sing.
