The shade of blue probably got it's name from the colors of the sea directly off of Sorrento.

  2. Sorrento Blue refers to the color of the water there (the Bay of Naples).

according to : http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-ent...  the water at Sorrento, Italy is "the color of blue Gatorade".

Sorrento is just at the southern end of a cove with Naples visible across the water at the northern end.  The island of Capri is a 30 minute boat ride from Sorrento.  Capri is famous for the Blue Grotto, where the sunlight is reflected up through the ocean water in this big underground cave making the whole place blue.  The water around Capri is literally the color of blue Gatorade and so clear you can see right to the bottom.
