Hi everyone, I'm going travelling on the 6th December with my partner. We are flying into Bankok for 10 days before flying onto Brisbane and travelling around Oz for 3 months. We then intend to fly to Auckland and travel NZ for 2 years on a working holiday.

Any good tips on what to take to Thailand and Oz and where to go in these places plus NZ would be really appreciated. I've heard Thailand can be quite dangerous and Pack safes are recommended to stop peple putting drugs in your case. Does anyone have any more information on this as it freaked me out a bit....

  1. I kept my bag locked while in Thailand, to be on the safe side.

Fraser Island is a must to do in Australia. You can stay over night on the island, or go for a day trip and stay in Hervey Bay.

The Whitsunday's are another must. You can stay on board a boat if you are into that sort of thing.

Go to Magnetic Island. It has a Koala sanctuary, as well a gun emplacements at the top of the island. The beaches are glorious, but they were almost empty in winter and maybe a bit crowded at the hight of summer time.   Again you can stay on the island but may want to book well in advance.

You can access Magnetic Island by a 20 minute ferry ride from Townsville.

    Don't bother staying in Brisbane.

  2. In Melbourne, there are a lot of great things to do:

    - see an AFL football patch (starts around March each year if you're here then)... it's part of Melbourne's culture.

    - Go down to St Kilda Beach and walk along Acland Street. Then walk a few hundred metres to Luna Park. There's also some great hostels in St Kilda if you're looking for cheap accommodation.

    - If you're interested in zoos - there's the Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary (for native wildlife mainly). Melbourne Zoo is the most accessible.

    - Shopping in the CBD is great in Melbourne. There are lots of cafes and restaurants, and some beautiful parks and gardens. Have a look at the Fitzroy Gardens right on the edge of the CBD, and the Botanic Gardens - a real oasis right near the city.

I went to NZ over summer last year. I recommend:

    - Queenstown. It's a real tourist town (very few locals that I found!) but very pretty. Take the gondola to the top of the mountain.

    - Milford Sound. Take the bus as opposed to driving. It's a long day overall so nice to be able to relax on the way back. Take fly spray though!

    Have fun!

  3. As for safety thousands are travelling all the time without incident but one must always take precautions and not put anything in vulnerable places,Nothing to worry about just remain vigilante that goes for travelling anywhere. The trouble with Thailand is it is easy to get sick from the water. i know as i got terribly sick but it didn't last long and left me as quick as it came. maybe you could carry some pills to settle the stomach in case. You will only need the lightest of clothing in Australia and thailand but for New zealand you will need warm clothing. Going North of Brisbane at that time of year is not a good idea as in the tropics it is the wet season and hot and sticky but if you can Airlie beach is lovely and cruising around the whitsunday islands. Go down to the Gold Coast for some magnificent beaches . In New Zealand the South island is the most scenic Go to Wellington take a trip on the cable car up to the botanical gardens and a great view of wellington Get the ferry to Picton about $65 and hire a car or camper van travel via Queen Charlotte sounds to Nelson go out To Kaiteri teri and walk the Able Tasman National park drive down the West Coast through toFranze Joseph and Fox Glacier on to Wanaka and Queenstown.  You'll love it all.

  4. I live in Australia and I can recommend a few places, in Canberra Questacon isn't bad but it is a bit of a boring place. Sydney you need to see Darling harbor and them places, like the opera house, harbor Bridge.

Oh and also in Sydney Luna Park, but if your going to Melbourne I have heard Luna Park there is better. Also Bondi Beach in Sydney, best beach!

In QLD you have to do the theme parks, Dream World, Movie World, Sea World, Wet and Wild, all of them. And also the Great Barrier reef.

The very best place to see Australia wildlife in the wild is Kangaroo Island.  You need to go to northern Queensland to have a chance to see a platypus.

not so sure of the best places in the rest of Australia because I haven't had the chance to see them yet
