  1. Currency trading.

  2. Um, currency trading is pretty hardcore for a first-time investor.

Are you new to this sector of investing or new to investing altogether? If you're new to this sector, then, well, which sector do you mean? If you're new to investing, here's my advice:

If I were you, I'd do alot of reading about the markets on as many different news sites as I can find (so you don't get stuck with a single perspective) and do a little soul searching.

How much risk are you willing to put into your portfolio?

The answer to that question will depend on your age and what you want to do with your profits. If investing is all "play" money for you, then you can set your risk threshold higher than if you plan to live off your investments in the future.

What markets are you comfortable with?

Do you only want your money in domestic companies?

Are you interested in emerging markets like China and India?

Would you consider trading on foreign exchanges?

How about over-the-counter stocks and pink sheets?

Or do you want to stick to companies on your country's major exchanges? (For definitions of any of those terms, check out investopedia.com. It's a lifesaver)

Have you thought about choosing a specific business sector to invest in? Is there a field that you know about already and you can use to your advantage when you're investing?

Personally, I like reading about China and India. I understand the telecom sector, and I find alternative energy interesting. So I tend to leave the rest of it alone and focus on the stocks in those areas.

Once you answer these questions, you can narrow down your investing a lot. As for stock tips, don't use the big guys like Motley Fool or Mad Money. If Cramer (for example) recommends it, you know everybody will be jumping into the stock, and your profits will disappear with them.

I use a few sites, like todaysfinancialnews.com, investmentu.com, themoneyblogs.com, and if I get bored with the American perspective, I check out a UK site called moneyweek.com.
