  1. Scurvy - it was at one time common among sailors, pirates and others aboard ships at sea longer than perishable fruits and vegetables could be stored. Scurvy results from insufficient intake of vitamin C.

  2. scurvy

  3. It was scurvy - a disease resulting from lack of Vit C.  Blood leaks into all the mucous membranes and sailors had to cut their gums to let out the blood (and by this time pus) to ease the pain.

  4. Most probably scurvy. I say this as it is the most popular shipboard disease.

  5. scurvey.  The copious amounts of cabbage/sauerkraut consumed by Norse sailors allowed much longer voyages than many other cultures due to the vitamin c content.

  6. Have you read the CHARLES DARWIN'S

    BEAGLE

  7. yup scurvy

    sailors' disease at that time

  8. tuberculosis? I THINK

something to do with vitamin c deficiency

  9. Scurvy. It's a disease that cause bleeding gums, rotten teeth and intestine trouble and you get it if you don't get enough vitamin C. Pirates get it. Yarr me matey!

  10. scurvy,a relatively common affliction of "old time" sailors because of a lack of vitamin C

  11. Scurvy... That's why the prejoritive term for English/British is "limeys"
