What shoes do I wear if I go snowshoeing?

I am going snowshoeing and I have never gone before.

I'm guessing the snowshoes strap on to your shoes. Am I correct? If so, then what shoes do I wear? Ski/snowboard boots? Or would those be too stiff? I'm guessing something waterproof and with support.

  1. yep snowshoes.....and pack boots or warm boots.

  2. Snowshoes. :)

  3. You ideally want a boot that goes over your ankles. If you can get a boot that goes up even higher, great.

Waterproof is good, but not mandatory. If the temperature is below freezing, you shouldn't get wet because the snow can't melt.

Insulated is also good...but not needed. I snowshoe several times a week and do not have insulated boots. I wear one pair of wicking liner socks and one pair of heavier socks over that. I am rarely chilly and never cold.

What you DON'T want to wear are snowboard or ski boots; Uggs; or "dress" boots. Better options would be boots from Sorel, Columbia, or The North Face...however I wear leather hiking boots and many of the people I take snowshoeing simply wear lightweight nylon/leather boots, Timberlands, or even just workboots.

The snowshoes have straps. That's how they stay on your feet. Depending on the brand, style, and quality of the snowshoe...the binding and straps will be different, but they all roughly work the same way.
