I’m fascinated with the detail of Trevor H’s answer but, unfortunately, it’s falls a little short of being correct. There are NO vaccination requirements to travel to Vietnam, but there are certainly very strong recommendations.

An Australian friend of mine was in intern at a Hanoi hospital, and he told me that the number of hepatitis patients is second only to motorbike accidents. In other words, what you eat in Vietnam could have you end up in a hospital. That in mind, it is a very good idea to get your Hep A & Hep B vaccinations.

Our digestive systems are not immediately accustomed to the diet and food preparation in Vietnam, so it’s a good idea to take along some remedies for an upset stomach. Pepto-Bismol, Tums and Alka-Seltzer can make the difference between being bed ridden for a couple days or get past something unrecognizable that you ate. If at the least, be sure to drink a Coke or Pepsi (yes, they have both there) during your meals. The carbonation helps to keep things  

Sharp corners and nails seem to come out of nowhere in Vietnam, and you could easily become infected with who knows what if you get scratched. Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date.

Malaria is always a concern in all of Southeast Asia, which would dictate taking malaria pills. The problem is the malaria pills themselves can get you sick and they are useless unless you are taking them daily as prescribed. I took malaria pills on my first trip, but I will never take them again because I felt like cr@p while talking them. It’s a very good idea to take them if you go into the country.

I always have a flu shot every year, and it’s a good precaution to have a flu shot just to keep from getting sick while on your trip.

Now you don't have to get any shot b4 going to Vietnam, but you should get yellow fever and hepatitis vacines. Also, you should take cipro pills, at least 2 in case you have stomach trouble. These information are for living in a city, not for living in a countryside.
