What shots does my pregnant shetland pony need?

  1. This depends on what part of the country you are in, the climate, and your pony's previous vaccination history. At a minimum, I would say she needs shots for the flu, for all three kinds of encephalitis ( also called sleeping sickness) for rhinovirus( which can and often does cause miscarriage in pregnant mares) for tetanus, and for West Nile Virus and rabies. If you live in the mid-Atlantic states, then a shot against Potomac Horse Fever and Botulism are recommended. Strangles vaccines are recommended for any horse, regardless of location. Otherwise, check with your vet and ask for recommendations.
