  1. Nothing. Canada should do nothing about the Omar Khadr case. He made an informed decision to join a war and fight for a foreign land, regardless of who that war was against at the time. He chose to fight as a soldier, kill as a soldier and inevitably be tried by the opposing country as a prisoner of war. He self-revoked his Canadian citizenship as far as the Geneva convention is concerned by joining a UN labled 'terrorist organisation'.

Im sure if anyone would like, they can cross reference Omar Khadr's POW treatement in Guantanemo with the treatment of POW's anywhere else in the world and they will be quite happy. No compassion for terrorists and those who fight with them.

  2. Omar Khadr was a child soldier and should have been treated as such. In other words, he was brought to any acts by his parents or by responsible adults. To hold him for so many years without due process or even clear charges is inhumain to the extreme.

Perhaps there needs to be a trial, but it must be under fair circumstances. He will not get these in Guantanamo. He should be repatriated and any legal proceedings carried out here. At the very least, the federal government should be vigorously and vociferously defending him.

  3. That was not a shocking video!  What is shocking is that young terrorist killing coalition soldiers!  Once a terrorist, always a terrorist.  Why give him any breaks?  Did he give the people he terrorized any?  NO.  Canada is absolutely doing the right thing, and Harper's view is not harsh, it is realistic!  As the saying goes, "If you are going to play with the Big Boys, you'd better learn to take you lumps like a man.  The most shameful thing about the whole ordeal, is that he was born in Canada and gives us a bad name.  Maybe he should immigrate to Iraq or Afganistan if he thinks life there is so wonderful.  Canadians, all Canadians, have to toughen up and start thinking like Canadians, and lose the "bleeding heart"  mentality.  We need to be fair, but we also need to be FIRM.

  4. Omar Khadr was treated fairly albeit somewhat harsh. He chose to be a soldier or his parents encouraged him to be a child soldier. Sleep deprivation is not torture and is something to be expected as a soldier in active combat. He may not fit the classical definition of a terrorist but he is a prisoner of war and as such should be returned to his family at the conclusion of this current conflict...not before. He was captured fighting for an organization that is actively attacking  or is opposed to the West. The Western World does include Canada, so as far as I am concerned his actions are almost treasonable towards this country.  This individual and his family have not embraced Canada or its values but wish  such values bail him out of this current predicament. Too bad "sonny"...you made your bed, now go sleep in it!

  5. I'm amazed how little some of the people who posted here know about this issue.  Omar Khadr was a 15 year old kid who was caught up in a war zone because of his family involvements.  As such, he had few, if any choices which makes him a child soldier and entitled to different treatment than adult soldiers.  Also, most of the US soldiers evidence against him has been discredited in the tribunal so far.  Also, citizens of every other Western country were returned to their countries and faced legal process there.  Everything about Guantanamo has been discredited by courts throughout the world and even by the US courts.  Finally, there is the fact that he has been tortured by the US authorities.  There can no doubt that he should be brought back here to face our courts.  This has nothing to do with politics - it all has to do with human rights.

  6. Hasn't the Supreme Court of Canada ruled Guantanamo Bay an illegal detention centre?

We all know they torture there because Bush approves it calling it Enhanced  Interrogation.  Also, because any media visits are allowed very little to look at.

He was 15 when in Afghanistan.

There 'was' an American soldier witness that stated that when Khadr was shot in the back the medic he was supposed to have killed was still alive.

He was a juvenile 'illegal combatant' by the Geneva Conventions.  However, Bush refuses to adhere to the Geneva Conventions and he's protecting every American in Iraq from prosecution and he has the unmitigated gall to hold Khadr without charge for 5 years!

PM Harper should be given a quick kick in the butt and quit kissing up to the war criminal Bush who has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis and now is murdering Afghanis with his bombs.

  7. Canada should do exactly as it is doing.  Leave it to the Americans.  Canadian's don't have the stomache to deal with the violent and dangerous people in the world.  As is evident throughout our entire society, we are a society who believe in protecting criminals, sympathizing with terrorizors, and forgetting about victims.

America doesn't follow this backwards principle of justice.

It's ironic that there are so many sympathizers who think that just because Khadr is a Canadian citizen - he is entitled to special treatment.  The fact of the matter is that another human being was killed - quite possible by Khadr.

The message are we are sending to the international community by pressing for him to be taken into Canadian custody is exactly this: "Go ahead and be a terrorist if you're a Canadian citizen - we will protect you!"

I'm sure if footage of the mother of that American medic Khadr is suspected of killing was plastered onto or Liberal controled news agencies the sentiment in this country would be very differant.

  8. Omar Khadr was 15 when apprehended. He was a child, and even though children in many countries are brainwashed to go to war, he is a Canadian citizen and should be treated as such. Secondly, any child soldier should be rehabilitated, as has happened in African countries. So, no he wasn't treated fairly.

Over and above the question of how we treat child soldiers, even ones who are Canadians, is the doubt (in his case) about who actually shot the US soldier. Certainly Omar Khadr isn't a criminal, he is the product of propaganda. If he is a criminal, assuming he actually could be held responsible for being a child soldier, than all other soldiers are criminals too. What makes him a criminal? The fact that he may have (and it hasn't been proven) killed a soldier on the other side? What idiocy!

  9. Just like Charles Taylor's victims, Omar Kadr was a Child Soldier.  He was abused by his father, mother and family, by Al Queda, by the American military, by CSIS and now by Stephen Harper.

People just ignore the fact that he was a child.  According to the more radical rights in Steve's party, Omar doesn't have the maturity to consent to s*x.  So, this youngster, who (according to Art Hanger et al) shouldn't have s*x is completely responsible for all results of the indoctrination to which he was subject??!!!  The Conservative Party's view of these things is just SO inconsistent.

Yes, he was there in Afghanstan.  What animus can be implied from that?  What do you do, when your 14 and your dad puts you onto a plane to a battlefield?

Omar is suffering because Canadians hate his father.  Steve and his Reform Party friends are misdirecting their anger.

  10. Khadr is not an innocent. At 16 one knows what is right and wrong. If the authorities leave this killer unpunished, then he could be another hardcore terrorist. Thank God, he was caught when he was just 16. Can one imagine by now how many people he would have killed if he was not caught? Dont feel sorry for this man. Don't also get worried when you hear "the sad story" of this man from his lawyer. Everyone knows how lawyers talk and try to convince general public in order to get public sympathy for their clients. They get paid very well to defend their client's case. You would feel sorry for this "kid" only if you dont feel sorry for the September 11 victims or those armed personnel or innocent victims who get killed daily in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was caught red-handed and should be treated like any other terrorist.

  11. He was a child soldier, but he was a trained terrorist, willing to kill all western infidels, Canadians included, whether they are women, children, soldiers, etc. He may not have been treated fairly, but what of the be-headings, car bombers, suicide bombers, etc. Were their victims treated fairly? They do not care who they kill or torture.

If you leave the safety of our borders, you should be prepared to suffer the consequences when you violate any international laws. This was very serious, and there are many kids that have been and continue to be trained by the Taliban and Al Qaeda. There must be an example. It would take years to bring our legal system up to speed to prosecute him. Let him face the charges where he is at.

Canadians cannot and should not be dictating to other countries how to punish confirmed, serious offenders. Leave him where he is.

This "war" is far from over, and it is a war! We must not allow our citizens to turn against us.

  12. The Question here is about a Canadian Citizen who allegedly killed a US soilder.

The Term Alleged is very imporatant since US bomb a village in AFG, if they allegedly think that someone is hiding there.

The point of contention is the fact that every other country who had people (similar to Khadr) in Gitmo have calimed their citizens and tried them under the law of the country that they belong to. Omar khadr himself is a born Canadian and his government is not supporting him to get him to his homeland and make a case here under Canadian terrrorism act.

The Canadian citizens who are not borned in Canada or should I say are not WHITE per say, are losing hope in Canadian government to get some help in a situation where they require intervention from government officials to be saved from attrosities in the hand of other governments. The conservative government is showing all the signs of being in BED with US like everyother time.

  13. I think Canadians like myself should be yelling and screaming at this "do nothing" government of ours regarding the case of young Omar Khadr. Talk about a clear-cut case of Human Rights abuse. Khadr's father made a fatal mistake moving his family back to Afghanistan. The father is dead and his young son, Omar, is being treated as a terrorist by a vicious American military. I'm not at all convinced that Khadr is guilty in killing that American medic and I don't believe Khadr will get a "fair" trial. Our government must demand his repatriation to his native land, Canada. If the govenment doesn't act, then it's lost to moral right to govern and needs to be defeated in the House of Commons at the earliest opportunity.

  14. Oh I really have to get involved in this question. OK lets look at what happened he's a Canadian citizen he goes over to Afghanastan to fight along side with the insurgents not, to go on vacation to visit family. By doing so he has tossed a gernade at an American Soldier and killed one. He gets captured he's in a prision and people are saying he's mistreated. WHAT? He has fought along side insurgents he has killed an American solider and Canada should get involved and bring him back here and have a trail as if he's a juvenile? He should have a trail as a terrorist. He knew what he was doing by going into a warzone to battle aganist the Americans his intent was to kill Americans. We have 2500 Canadian Forces over their how would that look to the battle? The Canadian Forces is fighting along side with the U.S. he went over there to fight aganist the Unitied States. Let's turn the tables what would of happend if he throw a gernade at a Canadian Forces soldier instead and killed? He should still be a juvenile?? GIVE ME A BREAK! His intentions were very clear to kill American Soldiers. He's a terrorist and hopefully the American courts give him a fair trail and then if found guilty he should pay the price reguardless of his age at the time. Canada should not get involved in this matter. He is under the US jerisdiction. For anyone that thinks otherwise you clearly don't know what's happening over there with both our Canadian soldiers and American and other countries military presence. I feel more sad for the American that was killed and his family rather then this guy that fought aganist the Unitied States. He deserves everything he gets.

After reviewing most comments. I have to add to this. People say he's Canadian and therefore, we must help him out. His family has ties with Al Qaeda they have openly expressed hatred for this country and we should help them out? No one would see that in the Unitied States. Canada gives out citizenships to people that doesn't give a d**n about this country and no one does anything. This is absolutly disgraceful that people would say we should help someone that hates the country he lives in. They say it's a matter of human rights ok lets look at that. WHERE WAS THE HUMAN RIGHTS ON THE FOLLOWING: September 11, 2001 4 planes were hijacked killed 3000 people, London Bombings killed another hundred, Train explosion in Spain another couple of hundred? Al Qaeda captured and cut off peoples heads and that's humane? This is a globol war on terrorism people. Yes the U.S government has invaded Iraq which was horrible. This guy has not been mistreated at all. He has been treated properly like a terrorist. We don't cut off peoples heads and other barbaric things like that. That is what seperates us from them. People say he's a child, a kid HELLO 15 is not a kid. He was brainwashed he knew what he was doing. I will stress it again his intentions were very clear to kill American soldiers. By killing Amercian soldiers he basically have went aganist our Canadian Forces since we are  allied with them. Oh but he's a Canadian, WOULD A CANADIAN GO INTO A WAR ZONE TO FIGHT AGANIST CANADA? That's basically what he did. Terrorists have to be delt with differently. We live in a world where security is hightend and new terrorist legistation for cases like this. He would receive no better treatment then if he was in a cell here; I would think some of the inmates would of kicked the s*** out of him in a jail here. What should we do instead bring him back here and kiss his royal a** and give him the Order of Canada to?? Bottem line, He should stay where he belongs. If he was captured and did nothing wrong then thats different, HE'S KILLED A MEDIC! I am sick of people trying to turn this country into a terrorist haven. I think if most of our veterns were alive today they would be digusted by whats going on. A lot of people clearly disagreed with the above part and some agreed and I know I will get the same reaction by the added part.

Furthermore, (if I write anymore I'm going to reach a page) this whole "child soldier" agrument is not going anywhere, why? 1) He WAS NOT part of a military organization therefore, HOW CAN HE BE CLASSIFIED AS A SOLIDER? 2) Al Qaeda and the Taliban are NOT military but a TERRORIST organization therefore, HES CLASSIFIED AS A TERRORIST. By the way 15 is NOT a CHILD, 15 IS A TEEN OR, YOUTH. If he was 8 or 7 yes call him a child it's a proper term. Let us not forget that we are training the Afghan Army those are the soldiers. Oh and if anyone read this and didn't read the part when I said the U.S. courts should give him a fair trial and if found guilty he should pay the price. He should not come he because our justice system is a joke and he's openly expressed hatred for this country. He was in a battle he was caught therefore, hes under the United States.

  15. NOTHING - his family was more than willing to get into Canada to receive help and medical treatment for their younger son while announcing that they support the  destruction of anyone that opposes their ideals and beliefs. Lets  forget what is politically correct and go back to the basics of what is right and wrong. He chose to back a side that he believed in and lost. His video of the crying and asking for his mother while being asked  questions of his involvement, is typical of anyone wanting sympathy.  We all want the freedom of speech and the ability to question what we believe in Canada. But like so many other things ,  anything committed in other countries it is subjected to the laws that apply to that county at that time. Back to the question of Canadians believing that this is too harsh. I for one believe that the justice system in north America is allot fairer than anywhere else in the world.

  16. His detention is illegal under international law. It's a disgrace that Canada is the only Country that has not repatriated it's guantanamo prisoners of war. Many US Courts have criticized Bush's illegal detentions. Bush's unilater war policies to attack Iraq has alienated most of the usual international allies of the USA. Obama is right that the terrorists are in Afghanistan not Iraq. Us went to war based on lies of weapons and terrorism allegations which they knew were false. This is a crime against humanity. The failure of the Canadian Government to do anything to uphold international law including geneva conventions and child soldier issues is especially disgusting as this is a minor and there is doubt that he even participated in any attempt at anyone's life. The USA is hiding evidence in regard to this case that exonerates Mr. Khadr. It looks like he did not attack anyone and that he barely survived being shot during the firefight and he was very likely just accompanying his father who was fighting and killed.

  17. I don't know what Canada should do about Omar Khadr's case.  But what I do know is that Canadians need to stop bringing up his  family's history against him.  He is on trial, not his dead father, or his mother who may have radical ideas.

If anything we should consider his upbringing in such a family before we judge his actions as a child, if he was raised in an environment where radical ideology was the norm, Canada should bring him home and allow moderate thought Muslim leaders to council him, while he was being tried in our Canadian Judicial system.

I was shocked and horrified when Canada published his pictures in newspapers and through other media outlets when he should have been protected under our young offenders act.

When we make a law as to who is a child, and who isn't, we shouldn't pick and choose who gets to be protected under this law.

  18. Perhaps we use the word terrorist in it's wrong meaning. Khadr should perhaps be looked at as a mercenary. The definition of mercenary is a person who takes part in an armed conflict who is not a national or a party to the conflict and is motivated to part in the hostility's essentially by the desire for private gain [which could well be the case for his family, perhaps not necessary monetary but perhaps gain in a position of power].

According to the Geneva Convention a captured soldier must be treated as a lawful combatant as a protected person with prisoner-of-war status. If after a regular trial, a captured soldier is found to be a mercenary, then he can expect treatment as a common criminal and may face execution.

Should l go to another country as a mercenary and become captured, is my founding country to bail me out of the situation? I would think not.

  19. I think that Khadr is still a child and since he is a Canadian every effort should be made by the Canadian Government to do something to get him back to Canada.

Once he returns the Government must see to it that he is treated properly for what ever crime he did.  He may need to be rehabilitated as he has to understand that the crime he did was of an extremely serious nature and he just cannot get away easily.

I do agree that he have gone through a lot in Jail both emotionally and physically so some of the punishment has been done and again as a child he should not have had to face that kind of extreme abuse.

The Canadian Government should have been given the opportunity to say from the beginning if they want to have Khadr in Canada and deal with the seriousness of the crime here in Canada.

  20. People seem to ignore the fact that Omar threw the grenade after the battle. The firefight was over and the troops went in to search the compound. That is when Omar stood up and threw the grenade and killed the medic and wounded the others. The Americans then returned fire wounding Omar. Omar could have simply surrendered, but instead he chose to throw the grenade to kill American troops and hopefully martyr himself in the process. These are not the actions of a misguided youth but a cold and calculating killer. You do not think he is smart enough to know that he is being videotaped and act up to it to make himself look the victim.

He is no longer being interrogated, he is in a communal compound for well behaving prisoners. He no longer has any relevant information that would be of use to the Americans so the interrogations would be useless. He is just awaiting trial.

The defence team is using old video to try and stir up emotions and many people are falling for it.

  21. I'd be all for Canada arguing for his repatriation under the following conditions:

    1) His mother is charged with child abuse and neglect and jailed.

    2) the whole family then has their citizenship stripped and they're removed from the country.

Canada doesn't need "citizens" whose main goal is to destroy western society.

Either Khadr is a terrorist caught in a firefight - not a "child soldier" (soldiers wear uniforms) or his parents are guilty of brainwashing him and creating a murderer.

As for the interrogation video, "shocking" is not a word that aptly describes it. Sham, perhaps.

In case the media hasn't noticed, most Canadians are fed up with being told how we have to be politically correct and warm and fuzzy about everything.

  22. Canada should join with the UN and the rest of the International community in condemning the very existence of Guantanamo, and demand it's immediate closure. The US has gone way too far in it's "war on terror" (war on peace and human rights is more like it!) and it's unilateral, aggressive approach to foreign policy is setting the world up for unnecessary suffering. Kadr is one victim, and he IS a child soldier. Are we now in the habit of making children responsible for the wars that narrow-minded adults fight? Guantanamo should be closed, and EVERYONE in it, including Kadr, should be released - those who have actual evidence against them can stand in a criminal court, where there humanity is respected, to face charges. Guantanamo and secret military prisons and  tribunals like it are an insult to the very notion of human rights and dignity.

  23. Canadian citizen, civilian accused of killing a slodier who had attacked his home in another country where at age 15 he was under the direct control of his parents. Canada should do all possible to have him treated as either a conscripted under-age soldier and treated as a POW at least or attempt to have him tried as a civilian in Afghanistan as that is where the alledged offense took place. He is either a soldier &* subject to the Geneva Conventions relating to POW's or he is a civilian subject to criminal law. This treatment is illegal, amounts to kidnap & toture. Any Canadian participating in his imprisonment & interrogation is liable to criminal charges possibly as a war criminal.

  24. Khadr's defense team has just released the most damning thing they have against the prosecution.  In the first place, it shows no signs of mistreatment -- the questioning is very gentle.  In the second place, Khadr is very resistant -- he is not cooperating with the prosecutors, and is making allegations that are fairly obviously ridiculous ("I lost my eyes and my feet!"), and generally acting like a petulant child.  Finally, the release of the video shows that the defense team is trying to try this "in the court of public opinion," rather than in the court appointed to deal with the matter.

Khadr has been treated more than fairly: he was captured, rather than shot, and shows no signs of torment.  The defense team is trying to use Canada to circumvent justice.  The Canadian government should not budge from its current course.

  25. This is a troubling event, troubling in that we (Canadians) are feeling sympathetic for a young man, who knowingly went to war, understood the consequences of his actions (at the time) and is now vying for fairness b/c he is a Canadian.

We are not discussing the actions of a young man who went joy riding in daddy's car, caused an accident and is being punished.  We are talking about a young man who joined his comrades,on the battlefield, to fight the invading Americans - right or wrong he made a conscience choice to fight and harm American soldiers.

When he went to fight, he fought as a national for Afghanistan, now that he is being prosecuted for his actions, his family is seeking clemency b/c he is Canadian - A young man who went astray?  Lets fight for the right things, not for someone who is not happy about the Western lifestyle.

  26. lWhat ever happened to the word "ALLEDGED". Even the american military have recanted on if he threw the grenade or not. OBL & the Talaban were all trained and equipped to defeat the Russians by the CIA. Should they not be considered culpable to some extent. Also he didn't go to Afghanistan, but rather he was taken there by his fanatical family. Had he been an African child taken by fanatics and trained to kill often members of their own family, he would have been rescued and helped. Unfortunately for Khadr, he was fighting the usa-big mistake. That nation is led by a group of very sick polititions, who recognize neither "The Geneva Accords" or the " World Court for Crimes Against Humanity". Harper has joined them in that, he too wants this to be a "Holy War". And besides bush has told him how to think. I agree the mother should be held responcible Under the "Chid Welfare Act".

All is not lost-Americans & sadly many Canadians believe that the end justifies the means. Way to much TV folks!!!

However since, mercifully "Growing Up Gotti" has come to an end, Maybe "Growing Up Khadr" could replace it.

  27. it is not a one 15 year old against the world strongest army and lost... it is global politics, which big power in which region has interest and who is the good guy and who is the bad guy is depending on a global situation... in the East European countries after the WWII were soviet reign for 50 years, contracted amongst the winners of the WWII, regional politics and nobody helped those countries movements against their unwanted soviet Quizlings... 1956, 1968 (USA Sovietunion involved in arms tryout in South East Pacific Regional powerplay which cost both sides a lot but was "peace" elsewhere hehehehehehe, 1977, 1989 but the situation was so hot and they cut off a couple of years of the 50 agreed between Stalin and Eisenhower Churchill ... in 1945/48 and 1990 Sovietunion is lost!!!! earlier than the 50 years agreed hehehehehe... let them start something what was convenient with disasters after disasters still the European Union did not give them helping hand... Omar Khadr has a lost case he is on the wrong side and must be judged unless something is changing in global politics and turns to be something else than a war criminal... history's turn arounds are funny

  28. Khadr and his family are terrorist and should all have their citizenships revoked.

Harper is doing the right thing!

Khadr's father was imprisoned in Pakistan as a murdering terrorist and got out thanks to the lobbying of Prime Minister Chretien. He then was killed in a gun fight with the Pakistan Military while trying to carry out a terrorist attack.

His Mother is on record as saying that she would be proud of her children being martyrs. She was also proud of the terrorists that killed the Innocent people at the world trade centre.

The fact that a great deal of Canadian media is siding with this family of terrorists is troubling. There should be wide spread outrage by true Canadians against our weak media and these Canadian Citizens (Khadr's) who only want to be Canadian when it benefits them.

  29. Canadian law for Canadian citizens.  Khadr is a Canadian and should be repatriated to stand trial in Canada, according to the Charter.  If we deny him or any citizen this legal and moral right, then we have begun on the slippery slope toward a destination that we cannot anticipate.  We should be applying as much forethought as possible insofar as it is highly likely, however horrifying to think, that future terrorist acts will impact Canadians one way or another.  Khadr's case is precedent-setting and should act as an extremely important step into the future.  Canada has an opportunity to show leadership in remaining true to its constitution and commitment to tolerance and multiculturism.  If found guilty, then he should be punished according to Canadian law.

  30. Khadr was treated fairly- he was being interrogated.  As for being Canadian, well, I certainly do not consider him a Canadian anymore.  Canadians are known around the world for their tolerance, acceptance and peaceful nature.  What was he looking for when he was in Afghanistan?  Was his Canadian flag on his bag when he was travelling?  Now that he is in deep trouble, his mother has the audacity so ask for help from Canada.  NO- you made your bed, now lie in it.

As for being a child of war- him and his family chose to send him there. Children of war are immersed in that surrounding and are often threatened to join.  Once again, he chose to be there and unfortunately some teens make bad choices.  As for the family, they made an even worse choice by supporting their son's actions.

  31. You call the interrogation video shocking...what! He killed an American Combat Medic brutally. He was not visiting on the pretense of a vacation, he joined insurgents and violently killed an American soldier. I, personally have someone close to me in the United States Army, as a Combat Medic and soon to be deployed to Afghanistan and d**n right I am scared. These are the heros of the Military, running into warfare to save lives.

Khadr is a coward who got caught, as a Canadian citizen or not he deserves the fullest punishment. As for being a "child of war" he is old enough to know that bombs kill people,

innocent people. To me Canada should stand firm, Khadr is a killer, murderer. Teen or not!
