Everyone has done the math on Nadal becoming #1. What are the chances that Federer can take it back? What tournaments should Federer win and what tournaments should Nadal lose? And how soon?

  1. idk gain more passion for the game? tournaments he should win is this u.s open.

  2. play good and hope nadal goes through a slump

  3. I don't know the math, but I really think that Federer can take it back. He lost Wimbledon, he got killed at the French, and he's now lost the #1 spot. Now what does he have to lose? Other than the U.S. Open and the Olympics :)

  4. Yes, Federer definitely WILL reclaim the top spot.

However I dont think he can claim it back this year cause he even if he win the US Open & TMasters Cup, he only defend the points he earned last year(1000 & 650 pts respectively) while Nadal will only lose 350 if he did not even make to those tournaments (the gap as at 18/8 I believe is 400, Federer 5830 pts & Nadal 6230 pts). In fact Federer has a lot of points to defend this coming year end while Nadal can increase the gap if he can reach at least semi in every event left this year.

I think Federer will be back on top after Wimbledon or even RG next year cause in that time it's Nadal turn to defend the points.

  5. Federer to get his number 1 ranking back by the US Open must:

    Win the US Open

    and Win the Gold Medal

    Rafa must:

Lose in the first round of the Olympics

and Lose before the 4th Round of the US Open.

This leads me to believe Federer wont be able to touch it until AMS Madrid and he still has final points to defend, whereas Rafa only got to the quarters last year.

For Federer to get his ranking back depends on a lot going his way and I don't see how he might be able to do it until a period of time where Rafa has a mass of points to defend and loses or Rafa goes through a rough period and loses early in some Tournaments.

  6. Well I believe if Federer wins the US Open his points would not increase because he won last year, I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's how its done.  He also won the ATP Tour at the end of the year.   He would have to win or do better in a tournament in the past 12 months to gain points and Rafa has to loose or do worse than he did in the past 12 months.  Winning doesnt gain you points if you won it the year before, you're just able to maintain.

Well this is how I understand it, but I might be wrong.....

  7. Now that Federer has lost his #1 ranking, it'll only be a matter of time before he gets hungry for it again. First off, he'll have to defend his US Open title just so he doesn't lose anymore points. He shouldn't have too much trouble because he's performed well in the grand slams this year.

Second, he should defend Shanghai. Next year is what he should focus on and put more attention to getting back on track.
