What should I bring on a 4-6 hour bus trip for me and my 5-year-old son?

Due to traffic, it could go to 6 hours. We are taking megabus for the first time from New York City. Hints re: megabus welcome.

I'm bringing a dvd player, a nintendo DS and books for fun.

Is one kind of food better than another for a bus ride? The last thing I want is to feel sick when we get to our destination.

Usually we take amtrak, and stay in the dining car, so this will be a new experience for us together.

  1. Well I'm no expert but I babysat my younger cousins and my little brother many of times. And even took the greyhound bus up to boston from nyc (4hours long) with my little brother a few times.

Good thing you got the entertainment, down! Hopefully you have a bunch of kids DVD's also.

As for the food, yeah take a variety of different foods. You probably already know and I know for sure that with food some kids can want different things. Plus they can be some picky little eaters.

    Have fun on your ride.

  2. You are going to be on a bus so you do not want to take any kind of food that may spill or make a complete mess...try to stick with snacks such as chex mix or lunchables...something along that line...you are not going to want to "fill up" or else you will have a very uncomfortable bus ride.

  3. Take coloring books.  When I was little, we went on road trips alot and I loved having coloring books with me.  Audio books are also great if you don't feel like reading to him, but he might be a bit young for that.

  4. My daughter and I are on the road a lot and I like to make my own trailmix with nuts (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds-depends on what we have on hand), chex cereal (we like strawberry), goldfish, an organic bunny shaped graham crackers(goldfish sized-my 2 yr old loves them), banana chips, and whatever else I can think of.  I try to stay away from the candy for obvious reasons.  We also like fruit snacks (I like to get them in characters my daughter enjoys playing with too like Veggie Tales, Snoopy, s****. Doo).

Bananas, apples, and grapes stay good for awhile.  You can slice the apples and put some lemon juice on them to keep them fresh and easier to eat.  Putting them in disposable bowls helps to keep the fruit from getting smushed.

Crayons, those magnetic drawing travel sized boards/pads.

When taking DVDs I've found that taking them out of their cases and putting them in a cd case that holds many cds/dvds is a lot easier to manage and flip through.  You might want earphones too.

Baby wipes or similar for messes or trips to an unclean bathroom and hand  sanitizer!

    Have a fun trip!
