I know that they give us a list of what to bring and what not, but what should I REALLY bring? What will I REALLY need?

  1. I went through Navy bootcamp twice.

Once in 1977, as a boot.

And once again in 1985 as a NCO. [I got out, went to college and then re-enlisted]

Both times I went with the shirt on my back. They provide you everything you need, and you will pay for it. so why bring anything else?

  2. You won't need anything minus what they give you. The less you bring the  better. Get plenty of sleep before you end up in great lakes. maybe a calling card. If your RDC's let you go over to Ricky Heaven you'll be able to call. Then again they might give you that when you get there I can't remember. Better to be safe then sorry. Also be prepared to think "What am I doing here?" when you first get there and make sure you keep up a good attitude and understand it eventually gets better.

  3. Just bring your body.  Everything else will be gathered up and put into storage or thrown away.

  4. Not sure exactly what Navy gets to bring but Marines get:

The clothes they're wearing, photo ID, social security card, $20 for food on the way down, and a sheet of paper with addresses to write home

The clothes, ID, social security card, & spare change get locked up in storage once they reach their MCRD

  5. a wallet with about $20 in it, a watch, a pocket sized religious text and a wedding ring.  everything else will be packed up and sent home.  anything you need will be provided to you or you will purchase there.

  6. If you believe in religion you can take your bible or koran

    Vet-USAF

  7. I'm trying to think of anything I took with me besides clothes.  When I got out I couldn't wear them anyway until 60 days into A-School.  I don't remember being able to keep anything "civilian."

  8. You'll really need what's on the list. What ever else you need they'll tell you what it is and take you to the BX to buy it.
