Question:

What should I bring to a Carne Asada?

We were invited to a carne asada for my friend's birthday at a local park. We're white (me, my hubby & 2 kids) but my husband and I speak Spanish. Our friends are Mexican and they're having a party with extended family for my friend's birthday. Only the kids speak English. We have only met some of the extended family. What should we bring? Is it customary for people to bring portions of the meal, like at an American pot-luck, or should we just bring like sodas and chips? Or nothing? We don't want to stand out too much, other than the fact that we'll be the only white people there.

Thanks.

  1. Spices maybe?  What other thing can you to barbequed meat.  Unless you mean an asado, which means a barbeque.  Then, you should bring anything you want.  Mexicans like American foods like potato salad, and hotdogs.  Just make sure you bring good condiments like onions, peppers, tomatoes, mustard, ketchup, relish, and stuff like that.  Coke is good, and Sprite.  Oh and homemade lemonade (not from the can kind, "real lemon" kind, or the koolaid stuff.  Maybe small corn tortillas to bake on the asado.

Yes, its customary to bring something.  The kids would be fine, because there are a lot of chicanos that speak english.  A mexican asado isn't much different than an american asado.

You could also bring watermelon with Tajin, which is a powder made of chiles, lemon juice and salt.  Mexicans love that stuff.  Tajin can be found at most hispanic sections of grocery stores, or just find it at a Mexican store.

  2. It's like a pot-luck bring whatever you want, but BEER is a must. Oh yeah and go with an empty stomach.

  3. well i also have been kinda in the same situation only difference is that im brittish. because once i was also invited to a carne asada which is one of the best things i have ever attended to. we never have carne asadas over here in london but once when i traveled to LA i got invited to one. So if i were u i would ask if u could bring anything to help out. like guacamole or salsa and chips. i dont know or maybe or bring something to drink like horchata or beer. but yea u should at least bring something cause like u said u don't want to stand out that much...

  4. carne asada means cooked beef in spanish. i think he asked if you WANTED carne asada not to go to one...

  5. Lol. Well bringing something is totally up to you. You can bring rice, or the salsa or some agua fresca. Have fun, carne asadas are the best.

  6. carne = meat

    asada = grilled

    grilled meat (duh)

  7. From my experience, usually, the guests don't have to bring anything since the hosts will always provide everything. I would say don't bring anything, since bringing something kinda says you're not into Mexican food and would prefer to have your own. But, I guess it doesn't hurt to bring some chips. I'm not sure if your friends are like my family members, who are strictly Mexican, but i've been to most of their parties and for birthday parties, the guests don't have to bring anything other than gifts. And I guess there's no way you can avoid standing out if the rest of the guests are Mexican but that doesn't mean you won't be able to blend in after a bit of intermingling.

  8. Guacamole.

I'm one of those people that will not touch carne asada if there's no guacamole.

  9. A fork!!!

  10. I thought carne asada was a type of cooked pork on a mexican food restaurant menu. Maybe you could bring sodas or even a punch or flavored tea. If all else fails I would ask what you could bring. I would not want to try bringing anything mexican since they will be having authentic food.

  11. ok well if they are mexican then you wanna impress (i guess) so what you can do is make seviche' my favorite fish food because they don't want only beef so here's how to make seviche'

    you need

    tilapia

    cilantro

    tomatoes

    onions

    and 1 or 2 jalapenos

you prob. only want a medium bowl so you only need 1 bag of tilapia about 1 of everything oh and a bag of key limes

so here's what you do you chop up the raw fish into tiny cubes

and put those in a bowl and then you chop up some cilantro about the circumference of your finger and then you chop up the tomato you might want roma half the onion and the jalapeno (s)

put all of this into a bowl stir it up now take two key limes and squeeze the juice all over the fish and cover the bowl put it into the fridge and when you go to the party you will have a great meal

now they may or may not have tostadas but that is what they are served with

  12. Fresh tortillas and salsa. These are always the first to run out in my experience.

  13. I like to bring stuff to Mexican get togethers. They usually love the way we interpret their dishes and it will only bond you more with them.

  14. Bring what ever .. its like a normal BBQ we have Potato Salad, Macaronni Salad, um Rice, Beans, salad, Chips /Salsa/Guacamole.. um ect... as long as its food and good trust it will be eaten .. lol dont stress .. (=

  15. I am white and my wife is Mexican. Carne Asada is the food they will be cooking.... It is grilled skirt steak that you cook on grill and eat with tortillas. You should definitely bring something. If you plan on drinking bring beer, and if you feel gutsy cook something.... Try making frijoles con chorizo. Just make refried beans and mix in a little pan fried chorizo. It's the best! Good luck!

  16. soda and chips is probably the best idea because if u dont know what to bring then just go with a simple favorite-they r lucky for u to bring anything-hope i helped-xoxo-glitznglamgirl

  17. i dont think u should cuz its a birthday party n they usually have evrythin...if u insist on takin somethin, i guess a small gift for the b-day person would be fine...

ps. im hispanic mexican n do plenty of BBQ's n have gone to many as well...
